1993 MK3 1.3 - High Idle Speed
Hi people, Ive had a look round the forum and I couldnt really find anything that helps so I thoguth id post.
Im not really looking for a definite answer just a nudge in the right direction.
I have a 1993/4 Golf (1.3, the Single Point/Carb one) and its not doing great... In the winter it doesnt really suffer as badly but now its summer the problem has become VERY noticible.
After the car has been driven about and generally warmed up it starts to idle at about 1800-2000 RPM. When stopping at traffic lights etc, the revs will come down as I brake with the engine engaged - but as soon as I touch the clutch they float back up. The only thing that sorts it is turning it off then on again and even then the problem will come back a few minutes later.
(Its nothing stupid like the accelerator cable sticking, I checked that.)
When the engine is cold its quite rough but thats fine and after a few minutes its smooth but then the revving problem begins. Also, sometimes it wont start at all and in the past - tapping the accelerator can cause the revs to drop horribly (its even stalled doing this before).
It also judders quite abit (especcially when accelerating hard or going up a hill in 3rd/4th) and sometimes it doesnt seem to get all the power down to the road. I think there is a big time problem with the clutch which I think is responsible for the juddereing and sometimes the stalling.
I know this is two problems overlapping and I was wondering if the high idle might be caused by an oxygen sensor problem or MAP or temp or something...
Any thoughts??
Cheers
Re: 1993 MK3 1.3 - High Idle Speed
Hi,
AS far as I can remember they have a motor on the carb that controls the idle speed, it is black and round the back/side of the carb on the offside. Sometimes they wear and cause erratic idle.
It might also be worth carrying out the basic settings of the engine with a diag machine. The adaption number is 060 i think or maybe 069.
Hope this helps
