Bora 99 SE2.0 - Tapping/Ticking sound from the engine

Hi all

Im getting a pretty distinctive tapping sound coming the engine - sounds like the top of the engine. Tappets, etc area. Increases as engine revs...

Anyone had this issue before on their bora/golf? Any ideas on fixes, costs, etc? Maybe its normal? Its not that bad when idling, but as you rev its more obvious.

Certainly sounds like tappets but it is not a problem I see often with this engine. I would try an oil and filter change first. If that doesn’t cure it, an oil pressure test would be the next step. I have never seen cam wear on one of these engines but I have known the lifters to fail and that is quite a lot of work to do as it includes replacing the cam belt as well when you should also replace the water pump.

I just changed the oil & filter today - thats when I really noticed the tapping noise. I hope it improves.

How does one do an oil pressure test? Sounds like a garage job....

By the way, mileage is 76k...

You have just pulled some air up into the hydraulic tappets, it will go away.

I have driven about 90 miles today and its still doing the same. If it is air in the system, do you think it would have gone away by now?

I would have thought so, yes.

I think I might visit a vw place tomorrow and see what they reckon. Hope its not serious......
