Hi All,
Serviced car today (PD130 '03 passat SE Tdi).
At the advice of the guy behind the counter in the motor factor I bought 5LTRs of Valvoline 5W40 (VW505) oil. I notice in these threads people saying to use VW505.01
What are the repercussons of using the 505 instead of 505.01?

Not sure what could happen (if anything) from using the wrong oil but if you do a search on here lots of people stress we must use the 505.01. I think its something to do with the pressure and stress these engines put on the oil.Quote:

Just spotted your in wicklow, Ireland so might be a little harder to get some Millers stuff. They have a couple of Irish stockist though.
This must be one of the most discussed topics on car related forums. The definitive answer seems to be that it will damage your engine to use 505.00 in a PD engine. eg from this thread:Quote:

the only 2 Miller stockists in ireland couldn't be further away!
I used castrol Edge 505.01 the last service. couldn't get any this time though (in the handfull of shops I tried) but was told by the shop that 505 was OK. Last time I listen to them. Now I'm parnoid. do you think it will be ok to leave it for a week till I get a chance to change it. only usage would be school runs etc.
I wouldn't think that the engine will fail catastrophically if you use the 505.00 oil for just a week, however in doing so you may cause damage that will shorten its life. I am no expert, second opinions very welcome.
Get the proper .01 suffix in ASAP, the 505.00 does not require the oil to contain special anti-scar agents which prevent damage to cam-lobes. The unit injectors leave little room for the valve running gear, so it is very narrow and has no rollers, thus will quickly wear out without the special oil.
got some castrol edge 5W40 505.01 today. will put it in tonight. is it necessary to change the oil filter again. suppose it's better too than not too
You definitely want to change the filter as it is going to hold a quantity of old oil, which is going to contaminate the new 505.01 when the engine starts pumping the oil around the internals
