Car idles but wont drive

I wonder if anyone can help me out.Today i had problems starting my Golf 1.8 Gti 1999, when i eventually got it going i drove for about half an hour before losing drive power and came to a standstill on the hard shoulder.The car idles but when put into gear theres nothing there and you cant even pull off.Greenflag towed me home, they suspect that the throttle position sensor is to blame.Is there anyway to check this before buying one, VW quote me nearly £400 and thats just for parts.Cant even get the car to a garage at present.Any help would be much appreciated.Thanks.

could be the thottle body thats failed..

if you can put it onto VAG-COM and get the faults codes we can take it further,.

Its turns out that the air mass meter i had fitted 5 months ago was faulty.Still under warranty so new one fitted free of charge.Happy days.:biglaugh:
