a4 tdi fuel gauge constantly reading full

my fuel gauge constantly reads full even with ignition off, all other dials work fine, when ignition is on, fuel gauge reads past full to max point. trip computer gives logical readout of miles left in tank as gauge registers full even with only £5 of fuel. any ideas?
