A4 B5 1.8 ADR Won't start after rebuild
Hi there, new here. A couple of weeks ago i managed to drive my fiances a4 into a flood and kill the engine.
After a strip down i found the conrods to be bent but everything thing else is ok. I have now rebuilt the engine and got it back in but it won't start.
The battery was removed for some time and i disconnected the ecu prior to the rebuild. Does the ecu need a new map putting on it now as suggested by Haynes? Is it possible to do this with a laptop and appropriate software? I haven't got vag-com lead yet as i'm trying to source one locally as i need it quickly so can't get any fault codes as of yet.
Is there any one in the west mids who sells the kkl leads or where can i get a schematic and components to make my own?
Its a 97 ADR with the silver box ecu.
Many thanks
Jamie

Without a fault code read it is very difficult helping you. Did you remove the block/crank or crank speed sensor?
Re: A4 B5 1.8 ADR Won't start after rebuild
Took the block out completely but left and measured the crank in the block. Left the sensor in place.
Trying to track down a lead asap.
Re: A4 B5 1.8 ADR Won't start after rebuild
Stupid question I know but the crank sensor is plugged in isn't it?
Re: A4 B5 1.8 ADR Won't start after rebuild
The crank sensor, is it the one on the block at the bell housing end at the same level as the knock sensors? If so it is plugged in. Ordering a lead for vagcom now.
Re: A4 B5 1.8 ADR Won't start after rebuild
How sensitive is the fuel pressure regulator on the rail fed by vacuum from throttle body? Just noticed a bit of crud in there.
I hopefully be able to pull up any fault codes tommorow now.

Re: A4 B5 1.8 ADR Won't start after rebuild
Yes, that is the crank speed sensor. I was wondering if you may have the crank speed sensor plugged into the wrong connection, both halves are grey but the knock sensor plugs are the same fitting. If they are dirty, you may have them transposed.
Re: A4 B5 1.8 ADR Won't start after rebuild
All went back to the right colour plugs, i was particularly careful with all them connections everywhere, especially after having to sort out wiring faults on a friends T25 Crewy after the wiring got mixed up when he took the carb out.

Did you pull all the pistons out and check the rings on the 2 that didn't have bent rods.
I buy motors that have flood damaged engines, and I've always found that when cold water hits the warm rings they sink into the piston. Don't know why this happens (maybe crasher dose)
What I'm saying is you may be loosing compression on 2 cylinders.
It may not be the case for you.
What number rods were bent btw?

It destroys the temper, the heat treatment.
Have you done a compression test?
