golf Mk4 GT TDI 130 air leak / limp mode

I have a problem with my golf which i hope you can help me with.

I have been reading various threads about the common limp mode and several reasons for this.

My problem is when i accelerate on a motorway through 3rd to 4th and 5th gear the car will give in and the acceleration stops. It will then struggle to accelerate and 'limp home' once the ignition is switched off and on again everything seems fine and back to normal.

From reading other peoples problem i thought i would get the error codes read, this turned up with 'no serious problem' the guy said 'its coming up as an air leak'.:confused:

So i'm thinking obviously a problem with some pipes or seal somewhere. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to start looking / any tips would be much help.

I have an update which i forgot to mention. Around 6 months ago there was a hissing sound everytime i accelerated (like the sound of leaking air). I eventually found the problem which was a loose pipe connected to the intercooler (this was suggested by a few people on here, thanks).

Now i am wondering if the air leak error i got from reading the codes is an old error from that previous fault? Do the error codes reset themselves once the fault has been fixed or do you have to manually do this?


I know there is something wrong but not sure what. Would i have to drive the car to get it to fault in order to read the error codes correctly or should the fault show up when the car is running OK? Reason i ask is because after limp mode i can restart the car and it seems back OK again.

After my remap at Chip n Spin Ive had a few issues with limp mode, coming from the same reasons as yours - hard accelation through the gears. Not all the time, just 2 or 3 times. An ongoing issue I have with my 150 TDi are the rubber hoses from the inlet manifold to the intercooler are very soft and vacuum up under boost. If the boost sensor gets a reading that is saying it is being over pressured then it will go into limp mode.

I have just purchased a polished alluminium replacement kit from Allard Motorsport, which also has an EGR blank off. This should alleviate the problem (I hope!) and also tidy up the engine bay with nice shiney bits :)
With the EGR out of the way, and also cleaning out the inlet manifold and Intercooler, not only will I get a better fuel return and cleaner burn, but also a slight power improvement.

I will post how I get on in a couple of weeks when I can get it fitted!
