Polo power steering
I have a 2003 Polo 1.9 TDI Sport. Sometimes when starting the engine (usually first thing in the morning or when parked all day) there is no power assistance to the steering for a couple of seconds. After that it works fine. Local garage said they couldn't find anything wrong except a loose electrical connection, but problem still occurs. Does anyone have any ideas/heard of this before?
Thanks

Re: Polo power steering
Hi,
I have a 2005 '55' Polo GT TDI 1.9, and the power steering pump has now started to work intermittently, sometimes taking a few seconds to work on start-up but sometimes about half a minute.
VW said they had never heard of the problem before whilst another garage suggested it could be the alternator!? A new pump is £550 excluding fitting from VW, however the pump is only 6 months old as I fitted it myself after the car had a lght bump damaging the original unit. There are no loose connections and it has plenty of fluid.
Regarding the previous posting, would a new battery cure this (the car is not even three years old & I think the existing battery is strong. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Polo power steering
I tried charging the battery and the power steering has worked fine ever since. Spoke to a dealer who told me the Polo is fitted with an elecrical cut out when the battery is low, so it must be related. However my steering only ever lost assistance for a max of 30 seconds so it could be that your problem is due to something else.
Hope this helps.
