2021 50 TDI Tiptronic Behaviour- slipping?
Hi Folks,
Have had this issue since I had the car brand new in Dec'21, but never managed to get a proper video to show the issue - had some other family health issues to deal with over the last 12 months or so, so this hasn't been a priority in the grand scheme of things.
So, i'm now just shy of 15k and I've finally figured out how to explain the issue: It doesn't happen from a stand-still, but rather when you're moving slowly, crawling in fact - e.g. traffic. Anything over 25-30 mph and it behaves perfectly. Long motorway journeys - perfect. It's only when it's slow speed (crawling speeds) around slow moving traffic, junctions, giving way, congestion, etc.
When you need to accelerate, it's almost as if the clutch hasn't engaged/disengaged properly and gives a slipping type behaviour (best way I can explain it!). I can hear the difference in the engine pitch between when the gearbox is engaged or this is happening.
My local dealer has looked at it a couple of times and say this is normal behaviour; Birmingham Audi had a brief test drive and said all OK. In all examples where I've been along, they haven't listened to me when explaining how to replicate the issue - they have just moved off from a standstill and cant replicate the issue.
I did take it to a local-ish independent VAG specialist; they have said they can see what I mean and can replicate it themselves, but go on to say this is a "feature" of this gearbox where it pre-selects gears. Birmingham Audi offered me the opportunity to test-drive another 50TDI equipped car, but never came through when I asked them to follow this up and just ignored me.
So I don't really know where to turn, hence asking folks here if their 50 TDI's do similar? This is my 5th A6 in a row (3 x C7 (2013, 2015, 2016), 1 x C8 (2019) and then this one (2021)), but first v6 TDI.
To say I'm massively disappointed is an understatement, especially since the build was delayed due to Covid.
So - I'd appreciate a quick look at the below to see if this is how yours behaves or if there is something wrong.
First instance is about 18s, then 33s, then 1m ish, 1m50s, etc.

Thanks in advance!
Re: 2021 50 TDI Tiptronic Behaviour- slipping?
It may be worth asking the dealer if there is a Technical Product Information notice about this and/or a software update. It sounds familiar to a shifting issue I experienced on a Toerag we have in and whilst investigating other (many other!) problems when I was on ODIS, I noticed there was a TPI and Software Version Management instruction for the issue. Mind you with the number of times VAG software updates go wrong and the nightmares I am having with the air suspension I dare not do it and as the customer hasn't mentioned it so I am not going to! What is the cars VIN?

Thanks - I had asked them previously and they said there no TPI's. I even found one someone else posted about something slightly related and asked them to investigate but nothing.
Re: 2021 50 TDI Tiptronic Behaviour- slipping?
If you have a VAG specialist nearby who has ODIS and is GEKO registered, they could put it on Software Version Management and see if there is an update and also check to see if there is a TPI. Next time I have to log into ODIS or erWin for an Audi I will try and remember to look but I will need the cars VIN.

Is it any better is S mode?

No difference, Weather/Temperature no difference.
Same with driving in Manual; it's a bit better, but still not what it should be.

Hi St3veM
Did you get to the bottom of your issue with your 50 TDI "slipping"? I am having exactly the same issue in a 2019 A6 50 TDI. Car has had the 23CK update and still have the issue. Really starting to put me off the car. Tried different driving styles and makes no difference.
Thanks!

Hey J1mbob,
Nope - sadly still got the issue. Unaware of the 23CK update.
I’ve just learnt to live with it despite it being an absolute PITA.

Ok, thanks.
Given yours is a '21 year car, it probably didn't need the update. I think the earlier C8's had a really sluggish acceleration issue which this update "fixed". Really enjoy the car, but this issue is, as you say, a real PITA!
Re: 2021 50 TDI Tiptronic Behaviour- slipping?
I found the same problem with mine from new in 2020, and is no better 4 years later. It's like the torque converter won't fully lock-up from standstill or low speed in 1st & 2nd gear until you've built more speed. The harder you try and accelerate the more pronounced it is, unless you really nail it. I thinks it's actaully worse in Sport mode! From what I understand, Audi programme the gearbox (ZF 8 speed OD5) like this as a torque limiter. As far as I know, you can only get over this with an aftermarket TCU remap, such as the ones that Darkside Developments do. As there's no 'official' solution, I'm going to get this done as I've decided to hang on to the car long term. Has anyone else tried a remap?
