Gearbox and Rear Diff Oil Good forever?
Manual 1.9tdi 6spd OX1 gearbox here with quattro rear diff and over 200,000 miles on the original drivetrain oils. No indication anywhere as to wether the lifetime life of the oils really is that, for as long as the car is alive. Plenty of threads where people say they've changed the oil because they thought it a good idea and some of them saying better gearchanges. I can well believe that some of this might be in peoples heads. My gearchanges are fine, Im not aware of any diff problems and wonder should I just leave it alone. No oil leaks so no need to top up. Can it be true that the oil in there will last forever? Has anyone ever put this to some sort of real objective test like measure power at wheels before and after a torsen diffs oil change?
Re: Gearbox and Rear Diff Oil Good forever?
At even 50K the oil can be "worn out" and cause the diff to rumble in cornering.
Re: Gearbox and Rear Diff Oil Good forever?
I have never been a fan of "fill for life". This mainly came about due to the car manufacturers making the vehicles cheaper to service. Not a propblem for the average private owner but if you are a fleet business then the difference in servicing costs make the final choice as to what manufacturer gets the business.
Gearbox and diff oils dont have to deal with the combustion byproducts and the same kind of heat an engine oil is subjected to. But, they still get hot and they still shear down (thin) over time as the longchain molecules in the oil slowly get broken down by being munched by gear teeth etc.
Cheers,
Guy

Shear down is a better way of describing it than wearing out.

Cheers, sounds like another job to add to my list. Must figure out quantity and specs now.

Re: Gearbox and Rear Diff Oil Good forever?
For the rear diff, 75w-90 Meeting API GL5 and we often recommend the Fuchs Titan Sintopoid 75w-90 as it also meets the VW TL 521 45-Y spec for your car and 1.5ltr will do the change Fuchs TITAN SINTOPOID SAE 75W-90 synthetic gear oil
For the gearbox you will need 75w-80 or 75w-90, the VAG spec for your car is G 052 911 and we have always had good results with the Fuchs Sintofluid 75w-80 Fuchs TITAN SINTOFluid SAE 75W-80 Syn Manual Gear Fluid As for capacity the 01E gearbox is 2.5ltr and the 02X is 3.5ltr.

Re: Gearbox and Rear Diff Oil Good forever?
Yes G 052 911 is allowed to be a 75W80 or 75W90 , but I've prefer a thinner G 052 171 , 70W75 like Fuchs Titan Sintofluid FE SAE 75W or Millers TRX Synth 75W , a common VAG spec found in A3 S3 etc .
I've a mechanic using the Fuchs G 052 171 in a box speced for G 052911 and it aces the cold changes .
