Is there something unique about the VW Carstick or will any USB dongle do?

Hi there,

About to buy a 7.5 GTi and keen to enable all the online stuff on car-net without having to enable a hot spot on my phone each time I drive the car.

I understand about the VW Carstick, but its really expensive, and I want to know if its unique in some way or a more generic device would do the same job?
