Do only VW make PR specific shock absorbers?
Our car has a PR of 1JC, indicating sports suspension. Every 3rd party shock that I've looked at which claims compatibility to this also lists compatibility with the non-sport suspension, which doesn't sound quite right.
Are VAG the only place I'll get the sports ones from?
Re: Do only VW make PR specific shock absorbers?
Do they! Dozens, per model, hundreds of them and some country specific; they have their own factory at Braunschweig to produce them.
Re: Do only VW make PR specific shock absorbers?
:D Yes, I know VW do vast numbers of types. I'm a bit surprised the aftermarket folk don't do a few more. In particular, that they don't do the one I need. It's a simple request...
Where Bilstein, Sachs, Monroe, KYB, etc do a single strut that is listed as compatible for both sports and standard suspension is it:
- set for standard ride
- set somewhere in between the two,
- an off the shelf vaguely similar to OEM damping characteristic generic part with ends to suit required fitting
Family might prefer a more supple ride anyway, so the not-quite compatible part from one of the above might be the easy way forwards. I'll give VAG a call in the morning to see what the proper spec item runs to.
Re: Do only VW make PR specific shock absorbers?
From further reading, probably similar to how TPS described the economy range:
"Cost savings are achieved through having fewer part numbers, using common damping rather than model specific, and by using materials matched to the requirements of older vehicles"
I wonder what "common damping" feels like. I want the damping of the common people ... like you...
Re: Do only VW make PR specific shock absorbers?
What is the OE number of your damper or PM me the VIN?
Re: Do only VW make PR specific shock absorbers?
I'm trying to find sports specific struts for an early Touran: 1T0513029S for the rear, 1T0413031BT on the front.
Re: Do only VW make PR specific shock absorbers?
Just realised I misread the tile, never mind... blame the time of day and the Vodka...
If we were doing it, for a VAG 1T0 413 031 BT (133.39) I would use a Boge 36-K78-A/Sachs 317 572 Which you can get for around £50 and for 1T0 513 029 S (£103.75) a Boge 30-D52-A/Sachs 310 715 which you can get for around £45. If the customer was feeling a little flush I would suggest Koni Active which are brilliant, I want them for my Octavia but they don't do them for the VRS...:(
