2008 A6 C6 Avant 3.0 Tdi. Sudden loss of power. Help with codes please
I have owned this car for 6+ years and have had no significant problems with it. Was beginning to think that it could not last forever and sure enough on a trip back from London this weekend the car suddenly lost power and emitted a fair bit of smoke on acceleration. I assume that it is limp mode. I made it back to Norfolk very sluggishly and there were no further symptoms during the journey. The glowplug warning light was flashing all the way.
Yesterday I plugged in and read the codes. The log is posted below. I realise that I am probably going to end up at a garage but I would like to get an idea of possible problems before I do that so if anyone can help I would be grateful. Also any suggestions for any simple checks I can do.
The 4 relevant codes are in the engine block and I notice that the P0101 occurred about 20 mins before the other 3. (The 3 fan codes are irrelevant - they have been there for years). I assume that the Auto Trans code is set by the ecu because of the engine problems.
After saving these codes I cleared them and went for a short drive. The flashing glowplug was gone to start with but the power was severely limited right from the start. Virtually no acceleration. After 5 mins or so the flashing glow plug returned.
I rechecked the codes again at this point and the only one that had returned in the short drive was the P0235 (Also the Auto trans code).

I've just had the same issue with my A6 3.0 TDI 134000 miles today.
Glow plug light started flashing and loss of power- managed to limp home with loss of acceleration
VCDS shows code:
005913 - Functionality limited due to Engine Control Module
P1719 - 002 -
I've had P0401 Insufficient flow codes flashing up intermittently over the las t2 years regarding the EGR system but can clear these codes.
I wonder if an EGR delete would solve all these issues- I realise there is a £1000 fine if this is picked up at MOT but to replace the EGR system is over £1500!
Maybe I am looking in the wrong place but I would appreciate your experience- otherwise I may have to consider replacing the car; it's worth nothing but I still enjoy it!

Yes I did. I'm not expert enough to diagnose your problem but the outward symptoms certainly seem similar.
I took the car to a very well respected independent diagnostics and tuning expert in Norfolk. He tested it and quickly diagnosed a stuck EGR valve. He gave me the option of blanking off the EGR with a plate and reprogramming the ECU to take account for this. The total cost was about £450 and the car worked perfectly afterwards with no discernible difference in performance.
He did say though that it was possible in this case because my car was one of the last of the model without a DPF fitted. He would not have done it with a DPF because it would cause DPF clogging problems down the line. He also said that the emissions reduction produced by an EGR was very minamal and that it would not cause a problem in an MOT. The car would also not show any codes because of the ECU re-programming. I did have it MOT'd elsewhere a few months later and it passed without comment. Was still working fine at 205000 miles when I sold it earlier this year.
