Boot/hatch lock stopped locking.

I have the A4 Avant Estate (5 door) and, before I acquired the car, the rear hatch/boot lid had been disconnected from the central locking system because of a fault (may have been to do with the alarm).

I have been opening the 'back' door (what is the proper name for this?) using a key. Today, when I opened the hatch it wouldn't lock closed.

I have been home and emptied the car out and have to leave it on the street 'as is'.

Could this be a broken linkage or need a replacement lock? I appreciate that this is probably a 'how long is a piece of string' type of question but I'm trying to find someinformation to get me started. Finances really dictate a 'home fix'.

Any info would be most gratefully received (I don't even know how to remove the trim in order to get to see the lock).

Can any lock from a breakers be used or does it need to be coded to my car?

Please ignore this question. The locking mechanism and the key barrel are two separate items. Makes sense.

Well, it would seem that my required catch is rarer thar rocking horse poo!

AUDI dealer price is £65 / only one breaker thinks they have my lock (8E9 827 520) and it's £30 + P&P which I thought was a bit steep for a 16 year old part!

OK, the catch has a cover with its own PN. Who knew?

the part number for the catch is not M at the end its N

Well, I bit the bullet and bought a new latch from Audi as I thought, and still do, that the Breakers’ prices were too high. One place had a latch on offer for £49.99 (admittedly with the cover)!

Glad to say that I think that I made the right decision .... for once.

Whilst I got the hatch trim off I might as well try to sort out the rear wiper problem (a new thread to come).
