clutch slip / flywheel?

HELP!!....i know nothing about cars!

I have a 2003 Golf 1.9TDI PD 100 (i think) with about 54k miles on it.

I was accelerating in 5th gear recently (roughly 2000 revs) and the engine appeared to 'over-rev' ie. rev counter shot up with no extra acceleration (or deceleration). I eased off and everything returned to normal. There was no shuddering (as most people on this site seem to mention).

I've managed to reproduce the problem (in lower gears) 2 or 3 more times by accelerating hard, but it is very intermittent.

I friend suspects its the clutch/flywheel on its way out. Does this sound right? How long might it last before failing? Or is it just a 'glitch' that might go away?

The car is still under an Approved Used Dealer warranty (by about 10 days!!!) - would it be covered?

I would get it booked in anyway, seeing as your warranty is so close to expiry. I currently have a very definate clutch/flywheel problem characterised by shaking and vibrations when the engine is idling, although I've never experienced the over-revving that you have described.

Flywheel should be covered under warranty, and I have learnt from several helpful people on here that if the flywheel is broken, the clutch should also be replaced while they do the job, in which case you should only have to pay for the clutch parts...if you can't persuade them to do the clutch under warranty, which would probably be difficult.

Depending on the dealer, I recently bought a GT TDi and the dealer provided 3 months cover for everything on the car.

Defnitley get it booked in and have them check it out.. then if they cant find the problem and the fault comes back shortly after and outside warranty you have at least some chance of them fixing it under warranty.

yes the clutch is on its way out, i have exactaly the same symptoms as you mate.

just had my car in for a full service and the bloke at the garage says thats whats wrong with mine.

not sure about it being covered by the warranty, i should have thought so, get it back there asap and take them out in it and show them what happens and tell them that the clucth is on its way out and you want it fixing.

with mine being a 53 gt tdi pd 150 there is a dual mass clutch and fly wheel, about £900 to replace. OUUCH !!!!!

its just the clutch splipping... best way to test is to drive 1st, 2nd, upto about 40mph and drop it into 5th with full power foot to the floor..... if its going to slip it will slip then..

try the warranty.. however the clutch is a wear and tear part...

I did take it to the dealer but couldn't get the problem to reproduce. He tried 'jumping' the clutch a couple of times and said there was plenty of 'bite'.

I've not had any problems with it since???????

sounds like the clutch is on its way out...

is the car standard or remapped???

I've no idea what remapped is?? so i presume its just standard.

Still had no further problems, but i guess once it's started slipping it's only a matter of time??!
