Remote locking stopped working.. But theres more...
Hi,
I have a 1998 a4 B5 Avant Tdi and the remote has stopped working...
The batteries on the first key were running down and finally gave out last week.
Now, at the same time, when you remove the key from the ignition, the interior lights no longer come on, nor does the key removal trigger the auto door unlocking mechanism...
I have changed the batteries in both fobs as they were both suspect, and tried several different methods to reprogram, but none seems to work.
I have changed the batteries round in case they had been inserted incorrectly, (Unlikely but possible as it was dark in the car) but it still doesnt work...
Anyone any ideas where either, I am going wrong, or, what might be faulty and needs replacing?
I have owned the car as my DD for the last 18 yrs and this is the first time it has messed me about.
The batteries do have 3v each, and they are 1620's not 2016's as suggested elsewhere on another forum...
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I do have full VCDS if that helps the issue, but I'm not a wizz on how to use all functions.
A VCDS sweep reveals no fault codes....
Thanks...
N.
Have tried search but nothing comes up with the same symptoms etc......
Re: Remote locking stopped working.. But theres more...
I believe all the items you are having problems with are functions of the Control Unit (V94) located in the rear RHS, inside the small locker. Mine is enclosed in a foam shell and held in place by an elastic strip.
I had to replace my unit when the vacuum pump for the locking system, which is part of the unit, failed. There could be a problem with yours caused by a loose connection, moisture, or other damage. It may be worth checking it.

Thanks, I will have a look...
Everything works on the locking side with the key, but I forgot to mention, the alarm doesnt arm either...
Re: Remote locking stopped working.. But theres more...
Well found out the cause at long last....
I fitted a replacement RNSE style DD radio around the time the C/Locking stopped working but because the battery was running down in the remote, I didn't link the two...
However, on looking at the Quadlock connector for the new radio, it was wired incorrectly at the factory, and had a live all the time function where there should have been a switched ignition. This sent power through the loom and prevented the lights from coming on, and the doors from unlocking when the keys was removed.
Once this plug was rewired, the lights came on then doors unlocked as usual, when the key was removed.
Now the useful part.
To reprogram the keys, nothing I found on the web worked,
so,
I did this...
Unlocked the drivers door with the key, then opened the door and closed it again, but did not lock it. This cancels the self lock function, if the door is not opened.
Then put the key in the drivers door lock, pressed the unlock button, then locked the door, holding the UNLOCK button down. When the red light started flashing on the door, released the button, pressed the unlock button again and hey presto, the door unlocked.
Did exactly the same for the second key, and now I have two fully functioning remote keys, the interior lights come on when you remove the key, the doors which are programed on my B5, to auto lock on moving now unlock, and the alarm sets and disarms on the button too.
Hope this helps someone out...
All the other options listed, DID NOT WORK, on my B5.
TTFN.

I think all cars should be sold with a book of spells:)
