Audi A3 2.0 tdi bkd noise in 6th gear
Does this sound like a gearbox problem? When I use 6th gear I hear a loud, rotational type of vibration sound which feels like its coming from underneath the car but I'm not sure. I can go the same speeds in 5th gear without any noise, maybe some juddering sometimes but as soon as I put it into 6th gear the vibration is back and sounding really unhealthy. If I go above 90 or so the vibration gets a little quieter but as soon as I start to decelerate the noise gets louder. When I take my foot off of the accelerator the noise is still there but slowing if that makes sense. Any ideas? I'm desperate to get it sorted! I've not been driving it because of this for fear of doing more damage to it if it is the gear box.. thanks in advance!

it does sound like a bearing or the 6th gear has lost its case hardening possibly, or is just worn. i would start by draining the oil and seeing if there is the right amount in there and drain it through a seive to see if any largish lumps of metal come out and observe the colour, you dont want to see any sparkling metal in there.

Thanks for getting back to me, Zollaf :) OK great advise, I will get and do that as soon as I can. What are the next steps after that depending on the contents of the fluid?

next step is most likely going to be another gearbox, however i would pm crasher first to get his opinion on it.. he knows a lot more about these gearboxes than i do.
