Excerpt from current eBay advert says:
"I can get 38-40mpg on a run and will easily average 28-30mpg with usual daily driving..."
Is this really realistic?

No.
Mine averages 18mpg long term.
My previous b8.5 S4 only managed 20mpg over 11000 miles.

Sounds like typical ebay advert!
There is always one who claims 50 percent more mpg than anyone else.
Our experience of large petrol engine mpg is well under 20 around town low 20s commuting and 30 on a run if lucky, engines 3.2 and 4.3 litres.
Now the 3.0tdi will do them figures if not better.
C7 3.0, but at a steady 70 ish I got 34 mpg throughout a full tank and 6.5 hr drive. Around 26 mpg around doors.
It was calculated by miles covered for full tank, so not by the DIS. If i remember it was around 435 miles when the lamp came on for fuel level. So there is always a reserve left in tank. I only do around 6K per year so mpg isnt a concern with this engine.
I get a 31MPG indicated on the dash using the A47 and A17. Normal driving with some spirited over-takes.
If Georgey Dee's fig's are right 31mpg DIS equates to late twenties real mpg,
which for a large petrol being used normally on A roads isn't too bad IMO.
My equivalent DIS shows 36, once warm.
No doubt driving style plays a larger part in the mpg spread on the 3.0Ts.
My dis has never shown more than 22.5mpg even on a 30mile steady 70 motor way run. Long term average (worked out on tank figures) is 18.5. It does have a stage 1+ Revo tune, but it's definitely pretty thirsty!

I test drove an S4 Avant (B8.0) recently... ten mile round trip on dual carriageway and good A-roads, I didn't spare its blushes and it was showing DIS 24.0mpg dead on return to the forecourt. I was amazed.
