16955 brake light switch/glow plug light 1.9 tdi
Hi all,
Last year I bought a 2001 1.9 tdi (ajm) in fantastic condition and low mileage, the car is great apart from one issue, the glow plug light is on and after scanning it with vag com and replacing the coolant sensor, I was left with 16955 brake light switch fault that I couldn't clear, so I tried a few new switches (2 pattern parts of different brands and one genuine one from tps) and the fault is still there! Won't go away (rendering cruise control useless :/ ) lights operate as they should, all bulbs renewed fuses all replaced, removed towbar electrics which where scotch locked on and re insulated the wires, still blinking away all day everyday :(
Any help here?
Only things I can think of is the switch needs installing with some form of witchcraft or there's a broken wire to the ecu but I cannot for the life of me find a decent wiring diagram for the facelift diesels!

I know you have to fit these switches correctly initially as it can cause issues if you didn`t locate the switch and it was depressed while fitting. If I remember correctly, it may be possible to pull the switch plunger back out if you depress pedal first and let the pedal reposition the switch....it may work.

You can connect vcds and watch the 0 change to 1 when you operate the brakes on both channels for brake and ecu do this 1st.

sorry forgot to mention I've done this on group 006, it reads 0 - 1 - 0 with brake pressed or not, I'm led to believe it should turn to 0 - 1 - 1 when brake is pressed?

i can't figure out how you would fit them any other way than it is, it's the screw in type not the twist in version found on b6 and passats,

I believe that is correct. So check wiring from brake light switch to ecu for continuity or open circuit or a short circuit.

That's where I get stuck I don't know which wires they are at the ecu end, can't find a decent wiring diagram for the diesel b5

Hi Pepeb5, nuisance to fit and set. Changed my last nite. Basically I marked with black marker the plastic threading on the the brake switch when it meets the metal spring loaded housing to get an idea of depth.. Then I used an adjustable vice grip to gently pinch the back face of the springloaded housing and then un screwed the brake switch. I then took time to centre the brake switch, upside down mind you with my head in the footwell!!!!, and then started to screw in the new switch. Once I saw I was close to the marking I could see that the plunger was nearly fully pushed in. I then ran the VAGCOm and went to adddress 006 and would gently depress the brake peddle until I got a 011, instant reading. Sometimes it gave 010 then flicker to 011 so I would twist the brake switch a qtr turn clockwise, meaning the plunger was just being slighly more depressed and the spring loaded housing was now being pushed back towards me. Once I was happy I was getting 011 I turned on the engine, ran the VAGCOM, error cleared. Opened the old switch and interesting to see one of the contact spots had a scorch mark on it like it had shorted but I didn't,t need to change any fuses?? Hope this helps.
