Just a shot in the dark, but is the dimmer knob turned fully anti clockwise? try turning it the other way, dash lights go out completely when dimmer is turned anti clockwise. Worth a go! Its located between the clocks, to the left of the mileage zero one.
Tried That But No Joy Turned It Both Ways
Think I Might Be A Loose Wire But Dont Fancy Taking The Dash Out To Find Out It Aint As Need Car For Work So In Short Term Gettin A Torch
As far as I know, the number plate lamps and the glovebox lamp are on the same circuit, problems with these, or their wiring/switches can cause the instrument illumination to fail. Also the circuit board in the instruments can be troublesome, often these problems are 'dry joints', resoldering any suspect terminals can fix it.
Some good info in this thread:

I now have exactly the same problem, none of my dashlights, centre console gauges or heater controls light up. I've checked the circuit board already, but not the glovebox lamp. That has just reminded me, the night when the dashlights stopped working, a spring fell out of my glovebox, that must be the answer!
Thank you!

P.S. Will let you know how I get on.
hi
one of mine dropped all dash lights its more than likely the dimmer control i removed mine and bypassed it with a little soldering i dont like the dimmers anyway
