Re: Help with alloys please sizing!
1) Use 7.5x17 with 225/45 tyres or 8x18 with 225/40 tyres and you will maintain a suitable rolling radius (317 to 318 mm) that won’t adversely affect the gearing.
2) They may rub if you don’t fit the special VW steering rack for cars with 17” wheels, especially if the car is lowered.
3) Modifying your car is the only reason for living.
4) See 2

Re: Help with alloys please sizing!
I bought a set of 17" Santa Monica style alloys for my Golf Gt TDI 130. It didn't need any modification to the suspension or steering rack and the wheels don't rub at all. I'm really pleased with them - they look 100% better than the standard 15" alloys.
The only problem I had was getting the old wheels off the car as they'd rusted themselves to the hubs. I took the car to Kwik Fit and they knocked them off with a rubber mallet FOC,
Re: Help with alloys please sizing!
As has been said just make sure the overall rolling length or overall wheel/tyre diameter is close to your existing set up.
