3.0 TDI Remap

Hi All,

I have recently got a 3.0 TDI 245PS with the DSG gearbox and looking for reviews about remapping.

I know this question is asked frequently and I have searched and googled for reviews, but I was wondering whether anyone on here with the same engine would share their experiences of remapping?

At the moment I'm considering either Bluefin or the 'TWIN Channel Diesel Tuning Box Chip' from TDI-Tuning. I want something I can remove if necessary.

I remapped by previous A4 2.0TFSI Quattro using a Powergate box so I'm familiar with the concept.

My primary reasons are for more power and to improve throttle responsiveness, particularly off the mark. Having come from a manual petrol turbo the lag off the line with an auto is a bit annoying. (However, I do like the auto very much, so much less effort to drive than a manual!)

I'm not concerned about the cost and expect to pay around 400.

Oh the remapping vs tuning box?!?! I assume you are just going tuning box if you want to remove it with out TD1 code errors or increments showing on the cars system...

I've remapped BMWs with DMS but for my new BITDI I'm going to get a DTUK tuning box as they get better reviews.

Not bothered about the TD1 issue. The car is well out of warranty. I just want a system that I can take on/off at my own leisure rather than having to rely on someone else to do it. It also gives me something that I could potentially reuse in the future, although that theory didn't work with the Powergate!

Would be very interested to get your feedback after installing the tuning box.

You really need to be considering the limits of the S tronic gearbox. I Believe they are only rated to 600 nm. You're likely to go over that. Biturbo is a different story with tip tronic.

I have my 3.0 remapped and I will always be an advocate of remapping over a tuning box (previous cars were both mapped)

A remap will allow for finer control over throttle response and power delivery; always found a tuning box to be a bit spikey in terms of power delivery??

i had a Powergate for my last car (A3 2.0TDI 170). I used it once and then sold it on; generally if you want a remap then you aren't bothered about changing it back to standard any time soon. Also if you use a local(ish) tuner they should take a backup of the cars standard program and will flash the car back to standard for a small / no fee.

With regards to the limits of the S Tronic box if it its 600Nm then thats approx 440lbs ft. I believe post 2012 245bhp engines run 429lbs ft torque standard(?) which doesn't leave much headroom and is unusual for the VAG group as most things have a decent amount of tolerance built in

A properly developed map won't hit the box with a slug of torque; it should be smooth and progressive. Its the 'thump' and spike that will kill a gearbox

Not really sure a remap/tuning box would be very noticeable off the mark... added mid-range grunt certainly. It’s a bit of a faff, but if it’s just an occasional blast from the lights then have you tried the launch control? TBH, I find the Quattro and S Tronic pairing puts more powerful cars to shame... off the mark in particular so maybe there is an issue if you find it slow?

The first thing would be to see what you’re getting now at a rolling road. You might be surprised. If you still want to go ahead then go for a personalised remap that caps the torque because the limit for the box is 600nm. Or a box that’s adjustable plus a another dyno session.

I decided against it (see attached dyno graph) as it would be cheaper to swap to a BiTDI than repair an already fragile DSG at some point... but I am a glass is half empty type :biglaugh:

I didn’t believe the figures, but a Golf R had just been run (spot on) and another forum member had their BiTDI tested at the same place with much closer to official figures. I would be really interested to see what others are getting from their standard 245’s.

The C6 A6 3.0 Quattro with tiptronic had a very big lag bite.. S-Tronic by comparison is fast.


I have a 245bhp C7 A6 3.0 Quattro with S-Tronic, previous car was C6 A6 3.0 Quattro with tiptronic, the C6 A6 I had remapped via Bluefin unit, very good, easy to put on/take off the unit requires you first download your map to the handheld (usb) unit (which has an OBDII lead supplied), then take that to a computer connected to the internet and upload that map to bluefin, they in turn send you an email when your new map is ready to download.

You download it via the computer to the hand-held unit, unplug from computer, goto car, follow instructions on unit's screen... hey presto your remapped, your ORIGINAL map now lives in the handheld unit, your remap in CAR ECU, you can exchange back prior to services etc... very easy....

Now the unit cost me £400 and I'll be honest on the C7 A6 I have not bothered as it feels plenty pokey to me, I know what your saying with the S-Tronic lag but that is probably your selection and not the S-Tronic.

On my C7 A6 there is Eco -Drive- Sport-Manual modes, Manual is the fastest shift, so stick it into sport mode, then flick it into manual (gear shifter to left (+/-), I usually double tap the selector down (-minus -minus) to lock the gear (of course as soon as I hit red line it's going to shift to protect the engine), but I find I get the best (engagement) response from the clutch like this.

Finish playing, slide the shifter back to the right and sport / or drive.



I don't think a remap is going to be the be all off the car, the S-Tronic wet clutches are not made to take massive torque (2 small multi-plate clutches) I think someone said somewhere it's about 600Nm force (Direct-shift gearbox - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) which is alot , the car makes 500 Nm / 369 ft-lb .
Your remap will be limited and close to peak Torque.

Much confusion here especially
with Newton metres and Foot pounds .

DSG and S tronic .

Indeed 3.0 tdi are twin plate 228 mm , so if a 228mm single in an old 1.9 PD AWX engine can handle in good condition 300 ftlb a twinplate can handle 600 ftlb that's 813 Nm.

I'm aware of a 3.0 tdi DSG running with 419 bhp and 830 Nm , I'd say a manual could handle a bit more and S tronic less .

Torque is the clutch slipper not power and it's smooth delivery is vital .

I would never put a tuning box on a high output car a 1.9PD 105 , 1.6 CR yes , but a remap is more refined with its extra parameters like boost control and injector duration etc .

With a box most of them are a cheap resistor that fools a temp sensor into just dumping more fuel in , also with a box you are piggy backing the existing map with a remap you are changing the map .

Many a stock map has a torque spike that can be seen on a dyno print out , its where the torque comes in with a sudden sledgehammer .

When a box is added the spike becomes worse whereas a map can totally flatten it .

Remap is the daddy , the best , the most refined .

Of course there are maps and then there's maps , it's all down to the skill of the author .

For example here's two 1.9 130 PD Dyno Dynamics graphs .

Both are remaps .

They both have similar bhp but the torque is a polar opposite.

The flat torque curved one is a reduced torque clutch friendly map that actually is less taxing on the clutch than the stock map as it cured a small clutch slip even at 265 ftlb max .

The Darkside is a torque figure chasing , pub willy waving , Mount Everest torque spike , standard clutch killing 340 ftlb monstrosity.
