Fitting new rear spring to B5 Avant - Won't line up?

Hi all,

I need to fit a new rear spring on my B5 2000 Avant. I have got the shock/spring assembly removed and fitted the new spring.

If I fit either end of the spring in to the top and bottom seating on the cup so it fits in correctly the two bolt holes at the top are at 90 degrees to the hub mount at the bottom. But I need the top plate to be at about a 45 degree angle so the fittings at the top line up and the hub is in line with the axle at the bottom?

Have I been supplied the wrong spring? Can I just seat the spring as required to line up the top bolt holes and hub fitting at the bottom? Not sure how I will do that accurately as there isn't enough room to compress the springs and fit the assembly which would allow to rotate the assembly as required.

I have taken pics of the removal and will get them posted here for others to refer to.
