Oil Filter Housing Cap removal

I need some ideas regarding removing the oil filter housing cap on my 2005 A8 3.0TDI. Now I understand that the correct tool / socket etc should be used but like an idiot I had a go with mole grips and have subsequently now rounded the plastic hexagonal nut that is built into the top of the housing.

I have ordered a new cap from Audi and will source the correct tool to remove it in future (if anyone can advise which tool/ size socket is needed).

In the meantime I need to remove the old cap which has been rounded. My mole grips simply cannot get enough grip and torque to loosen the cap.

If anyone has any ideas that may help I would appreciate it.

drive to a garage, pay them to remove cap and fit your new cap. drive home, do oil change.

Yes. I was thinking of that as an option too.

Stillsons are probably much better than mole grips . If you buy a suitable size stillson then at least you have bought a useful tool rather than paying a garage. Or if you are cheeky like me you could return the stillsons and tell them it's the wrong tool your wife bought and get your money back.

32mm socket or spanner.
When replacing. Just turn it until it makes contact and stops. It doesn't need to be tightened down as it has an o-ring with a lot of overlap thus it won't leak or work loose.

If you are going to use a stillson or similar heavy duty tool to remove the cap, make sure that first you have the replacement cap and correct socket handy..... or you could find yourself with an unusable cap ( and by extension, unusable car......) :) Good luck with it....

Thanks for your ideas. I tried to remove with a Stilson wrench to no avail. Ended up breaking off the actual plastic head. Whoops. Luckily I have RAC cover. The nice RAC man managed to remove the oil filter cap with a large vice like wrench. I then replaced with the new cap. I have now ordered a 32mm socket so in future I can remove the filter cap without any problems.
