Hi I Have Golf 1.8 T 2001 and am having same problems, was advised maybe an air leak had 4 fault codes related to Fuel and air mixture. My mechanic has had a look at it and advised could be Throttle Body, but wants me to get it checked again on computer before changing this as is expensive.
I'd look at replacing the temperature sensor. My golf 1.8 had same symptoms - erratic idling, hard to start (especially when warm), cutting out. Replaced the temperature sensor and everything now fine.
Turns out that this temperature sensor not only tells your temp gauge what temp the engine is at BUt also how much fuel/air mixture to send to the engine. Mine was overfuelling (like running on full choke even with engine hot). This was an intermittent problem as well in that it didn't always do it, so sometimes the sensor did work but quite often got worse as the car got hotter.
anyway the temp sensor is nice and easy to replace and about a £10 from somewhere like eurocarparts.
Cheers

Thanks for the replys i think my problem is a throttle body but i just dont want to shell out 300 quid for a new one from the dealer. Trying to get a recond unit from a company called Headtune. I've tried a temp switch but it didnt cure it thanks for the tip though. I dont have any fault code stored or any air leaks as my lambda values are ok, if you have throttle body codes stored and you can accsess a diagnostic tester you can run the basic settintg on it. If i remeber right its 01 for engine electronics then 04 for basic settings and channel 98 the display will show the voltage and position of the throttle as it moves from stop to stop. If a fault occurs it will show ERROR in the display, i will let you know if i get my recond unit from Headtune and if it cures the fault. Cheers ruud boy
Ruud Boy when you put your foot down does the car seem to hesitate, then all of a sudden the power comes back, I was in first gear once and tried to pull away slowly when I put my foot on the gas pedal nothing seemed to happen then all of a sudden pow car shot of like a rocket, good thing car in front was at a distance....................... Does your car run like this.
I'm giving my car to the mechanic and let him sort it. I've had enough :-{
Thats exactly what happens stop at a junction no power then goes flying off. The fuel consumption is crap and theres a bad whiff from the exhaust like the lambdas working its nuts off, although when the emisions are tested their ok indicating its a fault under load. I'm still waiting for my recond throttle body if i ever get it i'll let you know if it cures it :aargh4:
Tell me about it it drinks plenty of fuel, let me know how you get on with the throttle body and if my mechanic has any luck i'll let you know. cheers
The throttle body needs to be cleaned because of sludge deposits that get on it over the time. Then all that needs to be done is to do a basic seting and that should solve the problem.
My mechanic said he cleaned the throttle body and there was a pipe with a crack in it so he has mended it until we get the new pipe.
It seems to be running fine so far, have driven it for about 25 miles and seems fine.
thanks for the advise
