Help identifying gearbox oil,please...
Hi folks,
once again I need a help from community .
I'm trying to buy some oil for gearbox and after going through the search and reading few posts (including one 23 pages long) I'm at absolute loss of what oil to buy.
Hence few questions:
- how to find type of gearbox (ZF19...etc.) without putting car on ramps?
- what aftermarket oil is of Audi quality but cheaper?
- and if someone have used any aftermarket oil then which one and what feedback is like?
Car in question is 06 reg A6 avant Quattro 2.7TDI with 6 Speed tiptronic gearbox.
Any help is appreciated :beerchug:
Thanks!
Eugene
Re: Help identifying gearbox oil,please...
Gearbox code will be on the PR code sticker in the spare wheel well and also in the service book.
You could try contacting Opie Oils who are a site sponsor, I bet they would know the correct oil...
Re: Help identifying gearbox oil,please...
They used this stuff for my fluid change in my 07 3.0 tiptronic, am guessing you have the same box.
ZF Lifeguard 6, Shell M 1375.4,Transmission Fluid, ATF,
No issues to report and less than a 3rd of the Audi price per litre. :)

Thanks guys!
I have emailed Tim the oilman before starting thread and he said that those gearboxes are very fussy about oil and he doesn't have any stuff that he can be confident in.
I took the picture of PR slip on first page of service book but apart from chassis number rest of numbers is total nonsense for me.
Can anyone crack the code?

Re: Help identifying gearbox oil,please...
Your Engine code is BPP and your Transmission code is HST.
You will need 8 litres of Transmission Fluid.
Re: Help identifying gearbox oil,please...
Don't skimp on the oil those gearboxes are expensive.

Is it your intention to DIY?
If so whilst within the capability of a competant owner the car has to be perfectly level and at a certain level.
So for most it's best left in the hands of a specialist, if possible find one that has the ability to drain the torque convertor, as just draining will require 7.5-8l a full flush will require 10l
I believe from Audi it is £27+VAT per litre an the whole job around £600+VAT, I had mine done at Bristol transmissions (who didn't have the ability to flush the convertor) however using aftermarker fluid and filter came to £270 inc VAT
Re: Help identifying gearbox oil,please...
Correct me if am wrong but It's a CVT gearbox.
When I did mine it took less than 6 litres to refill.
It has 8 litre capacity though.
I paid less than £20 a bottle. I think it was £15 plus vat.
I went with audi oil for peace of mine.
The next closest oil is febi brand but the price was not that much difference that's why I went with audi brand.
Reading that 23page does confuse you but it mainly refers to Mechatronic units.

Your wrong as OP has a 2.7 quattro and they were all fitted with a Tiptronic box, not a multitronic as in non-quattro models. :)

You are echoing my mechanic :nervous: ,
I think I'll go with original oil. In the moment it's £23+ vat at my local TPS store and my mechanic said he'll need a 7 L of it.
I'll pay about £70 more than for same volume of ZF LIFEGUARD 6 but at least my heart will be at peace.
As I have found out recently with refurbished turbo - you get what you pay for ( sometimes less) :banghead:
