Warning lights with keys in ignition and engine off

Hi, I'm in the middle of a holiday weekend and have recently bought a nearly new passat. The manual's in Spanish and beyond my comprehension.

I have two warning lights when the key is in the ignition before the engine is turned on. They both go off when the engine is started and I need to know this is normal. They are a red battery light and orange engine malfunction, according to this page Volkswagen Dashboard Indicator Lights. As I say, they both go off when the engine is on so hopefully it's normal.
