Help identifying Audi 80, 2.0E (1994 build) Ignition relay.
Hi all, This time last year I had a mechanic replace the ignition relay (under the dash) and it fixed the problem of intermittent starting. A couple of days ago I had the Throttle position sensor replaced (a used one) to fix auto Trans shifting problem. Ran like a magic carpet for two days. It died whilst I was traveling at 80 Kph and the engine died. I had it towed back to the mechanic who mostly works from me telling him what to do. (I got a broken back or I"d do it myself). He tells me this morning he got in and it just started, no problems.
I told him about the relays under the dash and suggested he change the ignition relay but the problem now is... The roving mechanic who replaced that relay in the first place took my pirated VAG manual on CD and I have no way of identifying which relay it is. Can someone help me please? Maybe a diagram describing all the relays under the dash would be fantastic but any help will be appreciated. I'm in sub tropical Queensland Australia and we often get very hig humidity and regularly 36 C during summer (just starting) so the weather is hard on European cars.
AJ.

its usually relay 30 that plays up on the abk engined 2.0e, this is the ecu power relay.

The problem turned out to be the temp sensor just near the intake manifold. It seems these cars are too smart for their own good. Disconnecting the sensor allowed me to start the car. This is how I've diagnosed several past issues with poor starting and other nasty issues. I'm thinking at the age of this vehicle and the fact it's been parked in Australia's heat without shade for most of its life, nearly all the sensors (I've replaced 4 of them in 18 months) are beginning to die. Can you tell me where relay 30 is please? Is it in the engine compartment or under the dash?
Right now the car is running like a magic carpet but next time (there always will be a next time) the thing plays up I'll go for that first. I ended up buying the throttle position sensor from a wreckers yard. The only new ones I could find are for manual trans vehicles. VW ought to be sued over their decision not to provide service manuals or access to elsa to anyone except their trained mechanics. The ones I've met don't seem to have any knowledge greater than a general mechanic until they look up VW's on-line diags. but they know how to charge for the title!
Thanks for the help

hi there, the relay 30 is under the dash, i have the workshop manual and parts manual so if you need a diagram or part number just ask, they are available on ebay in the uk and i think there are people shiping from china so maybe thats avaialable for you also. Are Haynes manuals available in oz? although no manual was made for the 80 1992 onwards the pre 1992 running gear is almost the same and the ABK engine is covered in the Haynes for the audi 100. Was it the blue two pin sensor that was replaced? not sure but think the throttle body and trans ecu need alignment reset with the engine ecu to set them up properly, do you have vag-com or vcds? this will help you to do a fault read and maybe find your problem.

Thank you very much for your help. I bought a manual of disc of Ebay. It was supposed to come from UK but has arrived in an unreadable form. I had bought one a few years ago but it was a pirate and Elsa wouldn't let me in. The paper manual I bought is a Haynes but only covers up to '92. Still I've gotten some good electrical info from it. Yes it was the blue sensor that got it going. I've got some software coming from the USA that runs off a notebook. I have all the cables. I don't have vag-com but I'm told the Ross-Tech gear I bought does the same thing.
There's only one Mechanic where I live that promotes himself as an Audi specialist. He couldn't find relay 30 that was the first problem I had until I gave him the disc I bought from the UK for my 2.8 Audi. He came back after discovering where it was, replaced it and in the process disabled the radio and air conditioning fan. Charged me $140 and stole my disc! The fellow I took the car to when the throttle body started giving false readings quoted me $500 for parts and $80 for labour to fix the transmission's rough shifting. Fortunately I have plenty of experience with auto computers. I bought the throttle position sensor second hand for $50 and had a Asian mechanic willing to do what I asked while I guided him. If I wasn't blessed with a UK surgeon putting 30cm of steel and 12 bolts in my back to get me walking again, I'd start a business repairing Audis. I've just bought a beautiful A4 very cheaply. Only 111,000 Klm. because the owner got quoted $1200 to replace the ECU. Relay 30 is probably going to fix it when I find someone to get under the dash. Thanks very much for your help. Forums are certainly a great source of information.
Re: Help identifying Audi 80, 2.0E (1994 build) Ignition relay.
you can download the ross tech software from their website and if you have a ross tech cable i think you will get the full use of the software. is the A4 abk engined? the reason i ask is the problem 30 relay is only for that engine. i found my software free online but took a bit of playing around to get it running. with your ebay disk are you supposed to load it to a disk first then install it, can't remember what the process is called. good luck, let me know if i can help with anything, martin.

Yes, this one is abk. I've got the ross tech cable by another name but it works fine. I've had great success with this setup. Thanks for your help. Now if I can just find a top radiator hose for the 4 cyl engine, my daughter will finally get her Audi. I'd hoped to give it for a Christmas present but she's a sticky beak about these things and found the rego papers in her name!
