Audi A8 4.2 40v AUW Engine Timing

Ok my old mans A8 was leant to friend and it overheated - water pump leaking like a sieve. So i bought the timing tools and a pump and set about begining the job. The problem being someone has done a timing belt with out the tools and now nothing lines up.
With the crank pin in and checked to be in the right position the cams do not line up. The engine ran fine before inspection so do i assume that the cams are in the correct position but the pulleys are offline? If a cambelt fails on these engines how do you align the camshaft timing i have one banks rocker cover off at the moment to see if there were any markings inside.
I want to put this back together properly by confirming the required position of the cams and reassembling everything in the correct manner.
I can't find any information on cam timing other then fitting the cam locking special tool which is no use here??
