Wheel bearing noise?

Not been on for a while, wanted to share my exp..

2010 CC 170PS manual 18" alloys. For some time last 10K ish miles had a droning noise most noticeable at 40mph. Got to the point I convinced myself a rear wheel bearing was on its way out. A few weeks ago I noticed the inner inch or so of each rear tyre (bridgestone I think)was practically bald.... Last week I had a puncture and got both rears changed to Goodyears. Hey presto no droning!;)

I have read somewhere these cars are overtyred and have a tendency to wear the tyre inners, whatever, I dont know but if you have similar noise check your tyres first..

+1 just the way their set up. Still managed to get 35K out of the origional Conties, so not overly fussed!

I know your droning had gone with the new tyres but if I was you I'd get a 4 wheel alignment done as I'd say your rear suspension is off. If left your going to have the same issue with your new tyres.

Oddly enough, I have a droning that I assumed was a wheel bearing.

(2005 A4 2.0 Tfsi)

Had a recall done at audi the other day and during their free 28 point check, they noted both rear tyres were pretty low on the inside edge (ok on rest of tyre - 4mm overall, 2mm inside).

I never put 2 & 2 together but maybe that could be my droning?

What do you guys think?

I'd recommend a 4 wheel alignment. it's cheaper than a bearing replacement. But you should swap the front tyres with the back first to see if the sound goes away. If it does get your alignment done

Yeah, I think I'll get the new tyres on and immediately get my 4wa done.

I'll be glad if that turns out to solve the noise.

Check a few threads out, its well documented that the rears on B6 chassis wear heavy on the inside, thats just the Geo of the car. Swap the tyres around and the drone will go, its another well documented issue. Do a 4w alignment if it will give you piece of mind; however I'd happily put money on the outcome in 20k miles time being the same. Im not sure however if the cause is exagerated on bigger tyres as I'm on 18".

Speak to your local tyre guy and they will confirm, BMW, Audi and VW are all reporting this type of wear on certain Chassis. I've spoken to 2 VW dealers refrence this and one admitted to un even tyre wear being correct straight up as theres nothing actually the matter with the it and the second denied all knowledge! A geo would be sensible if one rear tyre was wearing diffrently to the other!

Google -passat sawtooth wear- , many cars come out of factory with rear toe out incorrect settings. With time and miles you get rear inner tyres badly worn out and on top of that droning noise.

Most folk recon its better to invest into proper alignment of wheels to mend sawtooth wear.

I wonder how much has been spent trying to rectify wheel bearing problems when it's been a 'known' problem.

Rotating the tyres every 10,000 miles also extendeds the life of tyres and shares the wear over all the tyres rather than just the rears wearing.
