slightly eratic idling

Hi all,

New member and would like to say hi but also need some help.

I have read through some articles on eratic idling but not sure which one suits my situation.

I have a Golf MK3 cabrilet 2.0 1995 and when idling it is slightly rough. When I say slightly I mean it sounds like she is missing a bit, not really hunting but there is no rythm to it. This happens when hot or cold. When I rev or drive there is no issue at all.

Yesterday when I tried to start her she was idling around 500rpm and then died. After that whenever I tried to start her she would take and after a second or two she would die as if the electrics failed.

I proceeded to "fiddle" with the leads and various electric plugs which seemed to work but then when trying to drive it was as though a plug was not working. Yesterday evening and first thing this morning she has been back to normal with the slight eratic idling.

Anybody know what happened yesterday? Coil about to go maybe?

Most likely to be the throttle body.

The throttle flap is motorised and adjusts the idle mixture by letting more or less air through.

They gunge up and need cleaning and also electonically re-calibrating. Look in the vagcom / vcds forum on here for someone who can help do the alignment. Do a search to find out how and do the throttle body clean yourself.
