EML on. Which exhaust gas temperature sensor ? Please Help
Hi all. My Father has a 57 plate passat 2.0 TDI 170 PD with DPF. Recently the EML came on. I have run a scan with VAG COM (VCDS) and it has reported the following codes.
005213 - Exhaust gas temp sensor 3 (P145D) -006. Frequency 93 times. This did not bring on the EML.
and
009259 - Exhaust gas temperature sensor B1 S3 (P242B). Frequency 4 times. This is the one that brought the EML on.
Could anyone tell me where the sensors are located and how difficult they are to change. A guide / pics / part numbers would be nice if possible.
Also is there anywhere else that I could buy the sensors from or is this main dealer only.
Many thanks in advance for your help.

This should be in the top of the dpf canister in the middle with the lambda probe next to it.

Hi I have been to VW main dealer and he has given me a print off of the page showing the Turbo / DPF (Illustratio No. 906-15). From what you have told me I beleive the sensor I need for my dad is the EGTS P/N 03G906088 (Number 10 on diagram) @ approx £112. Does this seem about right to you ?
Many thanks

Yes that looks like the one but it's not easy to be certain. All the info I have points to this one but that don't make it correct.
Re: EML on. Which exhaust gas temperature sensor ? Please Help
I have just changed this one and it is UNDER the turbo. The newest part number is 03L 906 088 BS and surprisingly does not have the metal heat wrap (last 4 or 5 inches up to the solid piece of the sensor) anymore which was on the old part (03G 906 088 AN).
The electrical connection is one of three connected on the small bulkhead rack to the right of the turbo / air intake pipe (viewing from the front). The loom goes to the ECU from there and has on my 07 plate B6 (should be the same?) a black 2 pin, a brown 2 pin and a black 6 pin connector. They all route left running across 2 plastic bulkhead routing clips then across to a metal clip on the engine. The EGT sensor wire then drops vertically and is attached under the turbo to the DPF area. On my car it is the left one of the 3 (2 pin black) on the bulkhead rack.
Changing for the amateur mech is QUITE difficult and will take time if following say the Haynes manual procedures (remove air boxes / pipes, nearside front wheel, driveshaft etc, etc but removing these no doubt does make it easier to access the sensor nut if you have the time to spare. I did mine from underneath the car by removing the undertray, the additional plastic shield and the exhaust heat wrap which then gives pretty clear visibility to the sensor. It is a tight space and spanner leverage slight to say the least. The new sensor can be lowered from the top and fastened...my torq wrench is small and thinner than some.
I shouldn't need to mention that ALL safety precautions should be followed when working under a raised vehicle but I will.
Hope this helps? VW will charge £265 for the part (£112.50 + VAT) and labour (£109.00 plus VAT) for replacement.

DMitch16 - What makes you think it is the lower one over the upper one on top of the DMF ?. I hope it is the upper one because my dad has just ordered and paid for the upper one. They both have the same part number except for the lower one had the letter B at the end when I looked at the computer at the main dealers. Martin1810 - Can you shed any light on Mad Mitches post ?.
Thanks to all once again for you help and time.

After turbocharger is called Exhaust gas temperature sender 1 (G235)
In top of dpf is called Bank 1 exhaust gas temperature sender 2 (G448)
After dpf is called Temperature sender after particulate filter (G527)
Your scan said bank 1 so I assumed it was the top dpf one.
Working out which one the diagnostics is referring to is always a problem.
Re: EML on. Which exhaust gas temperature sensor ? Please Help
The sensor is coming wednesday. I will update once I have fitted it. Thanks again.

Re: EML on. Which exhaust gas temperature sensor ? Please Help
The lower one I took off has the 03G 906 088 AN part number and is the original one fitted to the car and called G235 by VW.
The upper one (as pictured)
Attachment 17657
has a longer sensor body, different part number and different electrical connector but both parts are very similar and perforated with small holes. The upper one is visible on the top of the outpipe around 10 inches left of the turbo and the metal part of the sensor angled at 90 degrees from the sensor nut (there is a second lambda style sensor further down the outpipe connected with metal piping). The upper one has a rounded 2 pin connector with one squared corner so it won't fit the other ECU feed. The lower sensor not visible is angled at roughly 40 degrees on the solid metal part and has a 2 pin connector rounded at both ends.

Thanks MadMitch - I am going to take a punt on it being the top one as that is the one he has bought. Hopefully it will not be an expensive mistake - well for my dad at least.
