A4 2.0 170 smoking and loss of power
Hi,
Noticed while driving today that the car felt a little more sluggish than usual below 2500 rpm.
I then tried accelerating in a high gear from 1500 rpm, checking out to see if I was imagining things and noticed a "smog" behind the car. It didn't look like it was obviously smoking - more like a browny/black sort of haze:confused:
Once you get above 2500 rpm it takes off like normal and as long as you keep the revs up it doesn't smoke either.
It has recently had a service and the injectors were checked (Audi)
Any ideas would be appreciated thanks

Hi,
Could be EGR clogged. I am trying to research info on my 170 (BRD) engine to remove and clean it. Cannot find any details so far. The EGR would cause the symptoms you state.

Precisely what happened with my A4 S Line 140 a couple of months ago:

Result - failed EGR valve replaced, problem solved.

Thanks to all for the advice.
Bought a can of carb cleaner and the gaskets today and took of the EGR valve this morning.
Badly coked up and the slip ring around the valve was out of place stopping the valve from closing.
All seems fine now, no more smoke and feels stronger than ever.
Thanks again for all the tips and links!
