Cruise Control cutting out
1999 Audi A4 Quattro - When cruising, any speeds, any length of time, the cruise control is just cutting out. I'll have it set for 2, 3, or even 45 minutes and all of a sudden it will just cancel itself and coast to a stop. When it cancels itself, it's hit or miss whether or not it will allow me to reset it. It never picks back up on it's own. I will try to set it as soon as it drops out and it sometimes it picks right back up. Other times, I will have to turn it off completely and wait a few minutes and turn it back on, and set it and it may/may not work. There doesn't seem to be any consistency and I'm in the northeast rural United States and we lack quality German mechanics to trouble shoot ANYTHING, so I'm very hesitant to take it anywhere. I was hoping one of the many qualified, experienced Audi owners could please :1zhelp:
Any suggestions as to what the culprit could be?

It could be the brake light switch, my cruise stopped working and this was the problem. I cleaned the Brake light switch and all was good.
It did happen again after that, so i bought a new one for £7, fitted that and its not happened since.
Next time it happenes, check if you have brake lights because you tend to loose both cruise and brake lights if its this switch.

Don't forget there is a clutch switch as well.....if it is a manual.

It is in fact a manual, but I'm not sure what you mean by brake and clutch switches? Are you referring to fuses? Even then, I'm not sure where to check/clean that? I apologize for my ignorance, but I've never dealt with anything like this before.
If it answers your question, the brake lights still work since it has happened...? :confused:

When he cruise doesnt engage, that when you need to check your brake lights.
if you get in the footwell, look at the top of your brake pedal there is a switch as in the web link above.
