I did an oil change on my 2004 v6 TDI the other day,
I drained the oil and then it started to rain so I left the oil filter change until the next morning.
When I took the filter top off and removed the filter, the bowl was empty of oil.
Does the filter bowl empty into the sump when the oil's been drained because whenever I've changed the oil and filter before the bowl's been full of oil ?
The car starts and runs fine with no warning lights.
Nobody have any idea's about this ?
Oil only goes round filter when pump works then oil goes back to sump. So when you undone sump plug and drained oil then you left it for a while and the oil drains back if you change oil filter when you did oil then there would be oil there.
Oh good, everythings alright then.
It's just that I've never seen the filter bowl empty before presumably because I've always opened it a few minutes after running the engine to warm the oil.

I have seen that with failed oil pressure check valves, do you get tappet clatter on a prolonged idle?
The engine sounds like it always has, no loud clattering, are you saying that the oil in the filter bowl should not drain into the sump ?Quote:

In my experience I have to drain the housing with a Pella type pump, the check valves are cheap to buy but absolutely evil to get at, fuel pump and turbo off.
