Cable has the advantage that you can get a full copy of vagcom (or free shareware if just using for diagnostics), stick it on your laptop and away you go, the power is at your fingertips and there isnt a right lot vagcom can't do....
Scanners have the advantage of not needing a power source, not needing a laptop and not needing software. they are more expensive to purchase initially, they more than pay for themselves in the long run.
having both in my posession, i actually prefer to have the scanner, the vagcom only ever comes out when i need to monitor readings realtime or i need to work with immobilizer/central convenience.
for what you want to do, id say get a cheap cable (£12 from me;)) and download the shareware version of vagcom. ALL my cables work or you get a full refund.:beerchug:
