Toruan '54 2.0 TDI PD SE Rumbling noise from engine
Hi Everyone,
First time poster so please bare with me! I have had my Touran for about 3 weeks, and I am delighted with it. However, I have just noticed a 'rumbling' from the engine. I noticed it while at traffic lights. I have noticed no decline in the performance, the MPG remains enchanged, the tick over (idle) is consistant and there is no extra vibration thorugh the clutch while stationary or while accelerating/deccelarating.
The 'rumbling' is dificult to hear with the bonet lid up, as the engine drowns it out, but it can be heard from the inside of the car. I might add, it does seem to get louder/quicker while I am accelerating, or just slowly revving with the clutch disengaged.
I have asked a friend who had an issue with his dual mass flywheel, and he doesn't believe it is that.
Any thoughts? A bit worried to be honest
Thanks for your time
Nathan

Will be returning it under warranty on Friday. Just hoping it isn't a major one

I dont know much about engines but wasn't there a serious problem with the early VW AUDI 2.0tdi engines something to do with the oil pump, and the engine has been known to seize and has to be adapted I hope for your sake that i'm wrong, it might be worth checking out in the search.

Theres a sticky on the top of the forum page about the oil chain problems and it gives you the engine codes, it may be worth checking it out, if it is that problem it may be worth having the car trailered as you won't have an engine to repair if the chain lets go.

Right, took it back, they had a listen, and said it didn't seem too bad! Bloke reckons it may be something loose. Going to service it next week, not dealer, but well respected local garage, and will ask them to have a forage whilst up in the ramp. Fingers crossed

Hi Mo - Been meaning to get on here again, thanks for jogging my memory!
I took it to a good local garage for a service, and they had a listen etc and they believe its the Dual Mass Flywheel starting to break down. My mileage is 105k, so its about right, but of course it could happen with lower mileage too. It has started to get slightly worse and louder, which does suggest they could be right (I trust this garage). They quoted a cost of between 800-1000 pounds, which is a fair sum. I took it to the garage where I bought the car (6 weeks ago) and the bloke was very arsey about it. Said if it fails he'll do it under warranty, but as it hasn't 'failed' its tough, basically. I checked the warranty handbook and he is of course correct - Although why he just doesn't do its beyond me, surely it wont cost him anything as the warranty is paid for?
I think the trade price for the dual mass fly wheel, Clutch and Release bearing is £320 (you need all three). I'd imagine there'll be a fair amount of labour involved, hence the crazy total price! I have a good friend who'll do it for me, for about £150, so i'll probably go with that.
I'm not sure what damage it can do if left for a period of time? Maybe someone can shed some light?

Ring up your local VW garage and ask them if your recalls are up to date. I spoke to mine recently for another matter and they told me that the dual mass flywheel recall on mine was carried out in 2006 a year or so before I bought it. I have a 2004 2.0 tdi. If yours hasn't been done then you may be in luck.
There is a place in dagenham called 1st gear transmissions. I had a new clutch, dual mass flywheel, release bearing and a gearbox rebuild (a bearing went) all for £1300. They reckon I could have saved £100 if I had bought the clutch kit off them. Their very very good. Long way to go, but I stayed there from 9-3 while they did the job and then drove home.
