Hi, I will drive in Europe over the Christmas period and need to purchase winter Tyres. However 17in winter tyres are eyewateringly expensive (£145+ per piece). Many threads on this site recommend to have winter / summer alloy sets and keep swapping them round.
So my questions is, can I put 16in alloys on my A6 (C6) to keep the costs low?

you can as the brakes on a 2.0tdi are 312mm. That means that 16 should fit...but it will be tight.
Theres no way of getting around the cost of winter tyres. £145 is for a premium set on 17"s (I have dunlop sport 3d winter tyres for that price). You can get 17" winter tyres from £80 if you shop around, but they will be budget no name tyres.

Yes you can. I was previously on the 225/55/R16 tyres on a 55 plate Audi A6 3.0TDI.

The sticker inside the fuel filler cap should give you all the sizes you can use on your model if I'm not mistaken.
I have an 07 A6 3.0 Le mans and ordered 16" alloys with winter tyres fitted. I was assured that they would fit by the supplier after giving all the cars details over the phone. I recieved them the next day but they didnt fit, the brake caliper was in the way. Contacted the supplier who sent out 5mm spacers, they still didnt fit. Contacted the supplier who sent out 10mm spacers and longer bolts, they still didnt fit. The supplier then picked them up by courier and I ended up buying 18" alloys and tyres because I didnt want to go through the hassle again if 17's didnt fit. Recieved the 18" alloys next day and they fit like a dream. Winter tyres are unbelievable, the wife cant believe the difference and drives in the snow/ice as normal.
16" alloys and tyres fitted and delivered were £750
18" alloys and tyres fitted and delivered were £1000
Now that the 19" summer wheels are off I will be able to spread the cost of a new set of summer tyres. I may even get the kerb scuff marks sorted.
Some 3.0TDis have 17" brakes, so obviously a 16/17 wheel will not fit. They look massive when sitting behind 19" wheels
I have 205/60/16 wheels fitted with winter tyres to my 2.0 TDI as recommended in the handbook. This size tyre typically comes in at around £110 (currently Pirelli Sotozerro)
