Excessive outside edge tyre wear on 2.0T Quattro
Hi guys.
I recently purchased a high mileage(100k miles) 2.0T Avant special ed. I noticed when I bought the car from the dealer that the outside edges on the front tyres were showing signs of excessive wear as opposed to the central tread. On checking the tyre inflation on the fronts they were both found to be under-deflated. I've also had the wheel tracking checked by laser allignment and all seem to be fine.
I suspect that the under-inflation has been the cause of the outer edge tyre wear but as its a high mileage motor I'm a little paranoid that something else might be the causal factor.
Is there anything else I should be checking before I splash out on new rubber for the car?
Thanks
Re: Excessive outside edge tyre wear on 2.0T Quattro
under inflation will not cause just the outer edge of the tyre to wear, but too much toe-in will
Re: Excessive outside edge tyre wear on 2.0T Quattro
Low tyre pressure will cause the outer edges of a tyre to wear faster than the rest.
High pressure causes the centre of the tread to wear.
If you mean the outer edges of both sides of the tyre, then it's low pressure.
If you mean outer edges of more than one tyre then it's possibly suspension geometry, worn bushes or something similar
Re: Excessive outside edge tyre wear on 2.0T Quattro
a tyre has only one outer edge darich, agreed, low pressure will cause both inner and outer edges to wear, but too much toe-in is the cause of the outer edge wearing
Re: Excessive outside edge tyre wear on 2.0T Quattro
Thanks your responses guys.
The tyre wear is on both edges(inner & outer) on both front tyres. I'll be putting new tyres on this week so will keep a careful eye on the tread wear. Any issues and I'll be back on here again!
Thanks again.

Forget about these crappy laser alignments, you need to full geometry check done on the suspension. You need to go to a place other than kwik-fit or farmer autocare for this. I know a place in Edinburgh called CLCM/AutoTyre. He does the real deal on suspension geometry. Its the only place I go for my suspension adjustments. 0131 4532698, unsure if there is anywhere near Perth but he's the only guy I know that can do it right and would recommend him, otherwise you will be changing your tyres real soon.
