I have been told by Audi that I require a new roof control unit at a cost of £490. I can purchase one at £135, but can not see where it is fitted. Any ideas please.(A4 cabriolet 2003).

It is behind the right hand side rear side trim but it is very unusual for these to fail. What are the symptoms and fault codes? I have worked on a number of 8H cabrio’s with roof problems and I have yet to change a control unit.

Thanks for reply, The roof opening light on the dash flashes when I lift the control switch to operate the roof. Thats all that happens, then the light goes out after a few seconds. I do not have a fault reader so can`t give you a code although I don`t know if relevant the battery appears to have given up at the same time. Hopefully you can help. Just remembered you can hear a relay click when you lift switch.
Why do you think you need a new roof control unit then?
When the roof stopped working my local garage could not help and I took it to Stirling Audi. They came back to me saying that it required a roof control unit plus the usual you could do with pads/disks etc. I notice you say it is unusual for this to go, any other ideas ?:1zhelp:
It is a very complex roof, I would only be able to help properly by working on it. Some common issues I have had are pump failure (this shows itself by the roof popping up at the front but going no further) and various micro switch problems. When I get one of these that won’t work, I start by folding it down and back manually and working trough all the codes until they are gone.
Thanks for your advice Crasher, looks like I don`t have a lot of choice now but to take it back to Stirling Audi and hope that they are correct with their diagnosis. Nottingham is a bit to far to travel. Although I have been told of a Audi Independant which is only a few miles away. Perhaps I should ask for there thoughts on the problem.
Just to give an update on the roof problem. My neighbours Audi cab`s soft top would not close today. They asked me how to close it, knowing about my problems. Anyway I manualy closed their roof using the key. I thought I would try mine once more, manualy I opened and closed it and lo and behold it is now working. I had tried this weeks ago when the problem occured. Typical nearly into winter and I can open my soft top.
