Turbo Charger sticking vanes
Good afternoon , I have just been told by my local Audi specialist that my turbo is going to need changing, the vanes are sooted up and the turbo is over boosting -I would just like to ask how common this is on PD engines ,the more I look into it it seems to be a known issue with these variable vane units, should we be using more additives in our fuel? or maybe giving them a good thrashing every now and then ? mine is a 130 ,on a 02 plate and has just short of 80 k on the clock. any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
regards Trevor.

Re: Turbo Charger sticking vanes
Common fault mate best option to get an exchange turbo and put it in I had the same problem and did the same cost me £285 for the turbo recon unit exchange if you do get one some advice would be to use good diesel not that supermarket crap regular oil changes because the turbo uses the same oil from the sump and give it a good thrashing every two weeks and you should be fine don't waste time cleaning the turbo unless you know a proper guy who can strip it down and clean it for you I would just change it clean your egr out if you do put a recon unit in
Re: Turbo Charger sticking vanes
Good Morning , How much would I expect to pay for the complete job with a recon turbo I have been quoted £800-900 ?? from a local independent Audi specialist , shouldn't they also change the oil feed pipe and change the engine oil , price seems a bit steep in these hard times ?
Regards Trevor.
Re: Turbo Charger sticking vanes
I payed £285 for the turbo exchange £180 to fit it in with oil change local indi have a look at your turbo where the oil pipe goes if it lookes gunked up change you oil feed pipe to turbo mine looked fine regular oil changes so didn't change oil Feed pipe you will need all the gaskets too I would get the parts yourself then just pay for labour.
Re: Turbo Charger sticking vanes
This is a very common problem on ALL makes and models of cars that use VNT turbo’s. The price of £800 to £900 for a rebuilt unit fitted inc. VAT is spot on. Why would the current hard times make that price appear high? You could always go back to Audi and pay £1400 JUST for the turbo itself, plus fitting. Yes the oil pipe MAY need changing but it does not have to be changed, sometimes they break when you try and get them off. Changing the oil and filter would be a good idea but you do it before you fit the new turbo so the system is fully purged.
Re: Turbo Charger sticking vanes
Thanks for that Crasher, I just asked the question as i have seen recon turbo's advertised for £300-£400.ish
I will get get this done as we need the car for a motoring holiday soon .
Local independent has a good reputation. I would rather take it there than to Audi .
kind regards Trevor.
Re: Turbo Charger sticking vanes
A good turbo reconditioning company will strip, clean, check and rebuild a dirty but undamaged turbo for around £350 inc. VAT. Have yours rebuilt, better the Devil you know than the one you don’t…
