passat tdi pd 130 sport tuning?

Hi peeps, im soon to be the proud owner of a passat tdi pd 130 sport. As with most turbo diesel owners the thought of 'chipping' has crossed my mind.

I have looked @ either revotechnik or superchips to have it done. They claim up to about 170bhp and increased torque but are these results really obtainable?

Some chipped owners claim extra power and still getting brilliant MPG but how can this be when the engine is being asked to work harder?

I'd like to get it done but i think for the price an extra 40bhp increase is slightly optimistic. I mean when volkswagon upgraded the mk4 golf PD 130 to the golf PD 150 it's not just a case of winding the boost up or messing with the ECU.

So has anyone had a chip done? Did they need their clutch upgraded? was the performance worth it? and finally how did if effect your insurance premium?

I've done loads of these and 45HP is obtainable quite easily. The Clutch should be fine, think if you start going over 200hp that's when you need to start thinking about uprating the clutch etc.

I have recently had mine remapped. (TDI 100 PD) The difference was unbelievable. Chippeduk where i had it done reckoned 40bhp increase and around 80NM of tourqe more. MPG is up too! Highly reccommend getting it done. Jayson at chippeduk did me a good deal. Try giving him a bell, top bloke. Matty

PD130 clutches are weak with the standard output. Don’t take it over 160PS and I prefer plug in tuning boxes as they make diagnostics easier WHEN you have a running problem.

The clutch isnt the problem when you map this car, its the hit of the torque limiters in the mapping that causes the clutch to go.

When you map this car the torque map has to be bought in smoothly then onto max increase at 3050rpm, not as low as 1400rpm as done at some places.

If the torque is done correctly the clutch will take a lot more than 160hp but of course its a powerfull diesel,

The torque peak of a mapped car doesn’t explain why they fail as standard though, but I worded it poorly as the clutch itself isn't the part that fails, it's the dual mass flywheel that spills its guts into the starter motor and into the bell housing. Many starter remanufactures now specifically preclude a warranty claim if a new starter fails from being full of stick black goo. Clutches are cheap, DM's aren’t!! And neither is the labour to pull the box and change one.

So is it possible to uprate the DMS? I've heard of clutches going on passats in reliability surveys. I'm still kinda in unsure what to do regarding having it chipped.

I'm got this diesel passat because i thought the engine was quite flexible and pulls strongly from 2,000rpm. But i also own an nissan almera GTi which its peak torque isnt until 4,800rpm yet it seems to pull stronger from between 1,000 and 1,500 rpm then the passat! lol.

I dunno whether it's just turbo lag before the 2,000rpm or something else is wrong.

30mph in 3rd gear in the passat is bubbling nicely around the 2,000pm and picks up brilliantly though the engine sounds a bit coarse. So i stick it in to a more settled 4th gear (again 30mph) and its revs are around 1,400ish and it takes an age too pick up speed. :confused:
