Will a full VAG suite help my A4?

Hi everyone, first off great to see so many Audi VW lovers here:biglaugh:

I'am a former Audi Group salesman lol so if anyone bought a car fro Smithfield Birmingham in the 90's it was probaly off me lol.

Anyhooo my probs

The Girlfriend has an A4 1.6 1995 (don't trust her in anything else lol)

Trouble started few months ago with the odd blip while driving at say 50+

Over the next few months it has got so much worse it feels like driving a sherman tank on 3 cylinders! A kind of mix like a miss fire and fuel starvation.
Sometimes it runs fine for a few minutes and others it runs like an old banger from start up. the power loss is embarrasing.

Ok so I plugged in a mini code reader and got loads of readings.
I cleared them, took her round the block did a re test and now get the old 00515 code.Short to B+(G40)
I have changed the dizzy cap and leads. The spark plugs too.
I will check for loose earth tomoz but can anyone shed just a little more light on what may be wrong and would I be much better off with the full VAG diagnostic suite?
Would this be able to pin point the actual error.

Probably not.

From the list of parts you gave you have not changed the sensor called out in the error - G40

Depending on the engine it is either :

" Hall Effect Sensor (G40)

On the 3B engine, the hall effect sensor (G40) is located in the distributor. The signal provided by G40 is used by the ECU to :

Determine the ignition firing point for cylinder #1 when the engine is first cranked
Determine fuel injection timing and sequencing
Create a reference point for signals from knock sensors G61 & G66
If G40 fails, the engine cannot be restarted (as the ECU needs a reference firing point). However, if G40 fails while the engine is running, it will continue to run by deriving the firing points from signals received from G4 and G28. In addition, the ECU will retard the ignition by 6 degrees as a safety measure."
