Arm Rest Phone Prep.

My car has phone prep. The docking station, where the phone specific cradle fits, is in the arm rest. I don't use this, as I connect via Bluetooth, anyway, why would you keep buying new cradles every time you update the phone?
My question is this:
Can the armrest be removed and replaced with a shorter (non pone prep) item, as when it's down it makes using the hand brake really awkward.

I believe all centre armrests on B7 A4s are the same size, whether they have a phone prep cradle in them or not.

Yes, I only use mine when staying in gear for a long time e.g. on motorway. All other times its fully upright or in Viagra mode. Don't know if it's the same in the B8, but the armrest in the A6 at least angles down as well giving easier access gear lever and (electronic) handbrake.
