Hello
I have a 51 plate Passat TDI 6 speed and I think the front passenger wheel bearing is worn out as it hums. The humming is only there sometimes and is more apparant when you turn right.
I have been told I could get away with packing it with grease.
I was wondering if anyone can give me pointers on how to strip the front down and grease the beaing, also how hard would it be to replace it?.
I am good with tools and cars but havnt yet tackled a bearing.
Any help and pictures appreciated.

I think the greasing idea is a non starter, there is no way to get the grease into the bearing (unless it is melted?!).
If you're handy with the spanners,
Undo the hub centre bolt,
Remove wheel, brake caliper and disc,
Unplug the ABS sensor plug from the wiring loom and feed the wire through into the wheelarch side, do not move the sensor itself at all, it's position in relation to the toothed ring, is critical and must be the same as the other sensors.
Seperate track rod end and control arm ball joints (top ball joint pinch bolt can seize, so worth applying penetrating oil beforehand)
You should now be in a position to tackle the bearing, This is best left to a garage or engineering shop as it should be done with a press. It is possible to DIY if you have a large vice and a suitable selection of spacers etc.
If so, support the housing and drive/press the hub out from the rear. There may be Circlips at the back and front of the bearing, these will need removing.
Support the front face of the wheelbearing housing, and drive/press the old bearing out, using suitable spacers/drifts.
Clean out the bore in the wheelbearing housing and apply some grease or oil. Refit the front circlip if applicable.
Press in the new bearing until it comes into contact with the front circlip or reaches its correct position. Fit the rear circlip if applicable.
Support the rear of the bearing, and press the hub back into position. Do not hammer it in, the bearing would be damaged by this.
Reassembly is, as they say, the reverse of the above procedure..

I need to replace my Passat CV Boot and my Haynes manual tells me to reove gteh Hub bolt. Measuring unscientifically with a ruler, I estimate that I need either a 8 or 9mm Allen Key or some kind of "Male" socket. Does this makee sense / am I misssing something please ?
Also the manual says replace the HUB bolt with a new. Could I get by re-using the old one e.g. with some nut sealant glue ?

Re: The bolt, Yes, you can get allen key bits, to use with a breaker bar. I think mine was 14mm?
The bolt should be torqued to a nominal figure, then Angle tightened through a certain amount of degrees. I forget the figures, but the point is, it is a stretch bolt and there is a risk it could fail if it were re-used. The CV boot kit, may have a new one included?
