ECU swap - immobiliser recode?
Hi,
I've a 2000 B5 A4 Avant 1.8T (AWT) that's not running :(
I'm unable to adapt the throttle. New TB fitted, and after much testing and no faults found in my wiring loom, I'm going to try swapping my ECU with a secondhand one.
Is it a straight swap? Or will I need to recode the immobiliser? I have VDCS, but will I need the PIN/SKC?
Also, it's from a Passat but has the same part number???
Thanks for reading,
Re: ECU swap - immobiliser recode?
The engine control unit is matched to the immobilizer control unit -J362- or dash panel insert (with integrated immobilizer). On replacement, the engine control unit must be adapted to the immobilizer.and you will need the PIN/SKC? to release the immobilizer, only then can the ecu be adapted

I could give the previous owner a kiss. I just checked the spare keys and the PIN is still attached along with the spare key and 2 plastic keys!
I think I'll get the second hand ECU, I can return for a fee.
I really hope it works, I'm 6 weeks without a car. Cycling is great, but...

Immobiliser III
Have a look in the 'Extra' fields in the 01 ECU of your current set up. If there is your 17 character VIN and 14 character immobiliser identity; you'll need the PIN (SKC) for the donor ECU too. On fitment of the used ECU to your car, the PIN from the donor car is used to release the ECU and allow programming the VIN and immobiliser ID into the ECU, it will then match to the cluster.
Immobiliser II
If there are no VIN details in the ECU; it will be an Immobiliser II version and saving 000 in Adaptation Chanel 00 (of the ECU) will get things going.
