It's pretty much buy a boat, fill it with fuel (and some young ladies) and off you go.
Make sure you insure it though as you don't want any nasty surprises!

You don't need any licences for driving a sailing boat or a power boat. You don't legally require insurance, but it's a good idea - if you cause an oil tanker to run aground, they'll be sueing you!
It's a good idea to do an RYA boat handling course (about £130) (or at the very least, read the course book), and a VHF course (which you need to have a VHF radio on your boat - that's about £80 for the course plus £30 for the licence).
Oh, and if you see any boats flying an "A flag" (white on the pole side, blue on the flappy side with a swallowtail), keep away from it, and try not to hit any tall thin buoys near it, as it might be me attached to the bottom of the buoy, and getting dragged up from depth by a boat propellor isn't nice.

You would have thought that the local governments near the coastal areas would have got together and devised a plan in order to exploit honest hard working citizens that just wanted to have fun on a boat!
A guy that lives across the road bought a boat last year, I dont think it has seen anything other than rain and snow. I dont think its been on the water.
But yes, odd that you dont need a bit of paper saying 'yes, you can go on the water now'

And as for a licence - anyone who's been on the water near hire boats will wish there was - although it's fun watching people look for a 'brake' as the try and moor up to the bank at 7mph with a tide of 5mph and just go SMASH! lol
One of my mates is buying a boat in a few months.....and he is going to live on it....with 2 kids.....and a dog. And i have seen the one he is looking at, lets just say would probably have more room in my car than on the boat.
