Leading on from another thread that mentioned a car having a full VW Service history - do you think that mileage matters in relation to the re-sale value of the car?
For example - say a 1.6 golf SE FSI - 3 years old with 40,000-50,000 miles on the clock?

I think, well my opinion... there are a few thresholds to consider when purchasing a 3 year old used car...
0- 30k - Uk average mileage, 10 k per year,
30k- 40K - upto 3 years old.. just over average mileage, 13k ish a year...
40k - 60k - high private owner - 17k average per year..
60k - 80k - Company owned car... most companies and lease hire cars are subject to a 80k or 3 years depending which comes first..
One thing to remember is that most VAG cars, cambelt is due at 60k which is a cost that will likely be past onto the new customer,
I do think that now more and more cars are getting higher mileage due to the pressure of sales and the cost of living close to places of work..
I know some one who puts 35k per year on their car due to a high pressure sales job.
One other factor is the type of car.... the 1.6 Golf is not classed as a "rep" car as such, most companies will opt for the diesel models do to the tax benefits, if cost is a real option they will also head for the SDI..
Is your a MK5 as that has been around for 3 years now..

agree totally with rick .....
in regards to mileage, i think the same way, if i see a high mileage car, i want to know a few things.
why has it got the high mileage? ex business/fleet/private owner? has it got the service history to support those miles, any gap in the service history would put me off instantly. i ALWAYS check for the timing belt, if it hasnt been done and the cars older than 2 years, ill always get it written into the conditions of sale that its done, along with a major service....thats 12/18 months worth of service free motoring.
ill usually check over the car too for obvious car park dings and supermarket scratches. a good indicator (generally) of a ex fleet/business car is the absence of these, company cars tend not to be used personally, as most 'businessmen' will go to work, come home, go to work, come home, thats about it, its usually the other half who has the runaround for the kids and shopping trips etc.
high mileage doesnt concern me in the same way it used to, but id still steer clear of a petrol with higher than average, in fact, i probably wouldnt touch a petrol with more than 50k on it. diesels are the way to go....:beerchug:

No it's not....i was just trying to gauge how mileage affects the re-sale of golf's as mine is probably going to be heading for the 40-50,000 mark.I've had it almost 10months on the 11 and it's done 12,500 (ish) miles already, and there will more than likely be another 2,000 miles to go on it before it reaches a year. I know i'm thinking a little bit into the future but i was just curious about the difference in the re-sale value.Quote:

Back on topic. The mileage certainly affects the price of the car. I must admit I though 12k/yr was the UK average though.
For me though if the car has been serviced then that is more important. Remember company cars will have been serviced by dealers and kept to the schedule. Private owners are not always so keen and DIY it often.
that seems to be one of the increasing problems now, it is hard to keep a service history when the servicing is done by yourself, BUT it is often to a higher standard than any garage, purely because you do it with time, love and car, not for the sake of money...Quote:

Yep you are right, IMO people who service their own car really care. Unfortunately my experience also tells me that the people who have bought mine don't think the same.
In my opinion mileage isnt really a factor, at the end of the day VAG diesels will go on and on and on and on and.....you get the picture. Besides, modern engines are tested that well that if serviced ect they should run fine. The only worry i would have is with the interior and exterior trim.
of course it is :Blush2: mileage plays a major factor in purchasing, it affects the value of the car and as such, if you're buying a high mileage you would take that into account, both for the price you pay and for the amount it will be worth in the future.....;)Quote:
