v6 4motion rattle?
Hi All Just joined
I got a mk4 golf v6 4motion. I bought the car last year and notice a slight rattle noise from the engine on tick over and throw the revs i just put this down to do the engine getting old, I got in to the car to night and started the car the rattle still there but once i bring the revs up the sound gets alot louder which it never done before. I know the noise is coming from under the oil cap gear box end!, sounds like it coming from the chain that can be seen throw the oil cap hole. The engine has just came up to 80,000 miles, has any one had any problems with this before, or could give me some adive on what is making the nosie
Thank you
daryl

Re: v6 4motion rattle?
When did it last have an oil change?
Are you sure the right grade of oil was used?

Re: v6 4motion rattle?
Yes, but VW are wrong, it has a chain not a belt and it is two days work (box out) to change it…:p

Re: v6 4motion rattle?
Sure thing Crasher, but weather it's a cam belt or cam chain is just a question of semantics is it not? Do you not agree that it could be the cause of the original issue?
By the way I like your avatar - what kind of tank is that? looks to small to be a Challenger?

Re: v6 4motion rattle?
You could argue whether it is significant it has a chain or belt but belts are a lot easier to replace (the gearbox has to come out on a V6 4M) and have an interval whereas as the chain is supposed to be a lifetime fit. The problem I have is convincing customers their chains should be done, no one argues over belt intervals as everyone who owns a car has had it drummed into them how important a belt change interval is but it is like coaxing blood from the proverbial stone getting a chain done before it jumps and buggers up the engine. Take the Polo 9N 1.2 12v as an example against the non FSI 9N 1.4 16v, the former is chain without an interval and has a nasty habit of failing earlier than the latter which is belt driven with a change interval and is actually less prone to failure within its interval.
That is a Tiger 1, Tiger 131 at the Bovington tank museum to be precise; it is my favourite tank of all time.
