hi there, i have a mk2 1.8 k-jet golf 1987 i recently did abit of wrk on it and now it will not start, i believe it to be the relay for the pump as i have done the volt test on the contacts as the haynes manual told, but i got 1 wrong reading across the 5-1 contacts, does any1 know wat this means ? is it something more than just the relay ? and if not does any 1 know if i were to hard wire the pump through a switch would it permanently be on and would this do any harm ?

well to answer my own question - i replaced the relay with no success still will NOT START. the only other things that it could possibly be is either wiring somewhere in the harness or the hall sender unit... does anyone have experience with this unit and is it most likely to be the cause of all my trouble ??? rather than a some pesky wiring somewhere.

Firstly you must not run the pump by a switch, the relay is there to cut the fuel in the event of an accident and the engine stopping, bodging this could be fatal…
If you look at the relay you will see there are two large contacts. Look at the fuse box to where these terminals correspond and use a wire to jump across the points on the fuse box, the fuel pump should run
i tried jumping the terminals 2 and 3 ( the large 1s) and nothing, i have also done the checks haynes mention for the terminals, 2 - grnd, 2-1,4-1 and terminals 5-1 all come back the same. i have also switched the relay with a new 1 and replaced the fuse box with another. all wiring has been checked for continuity and all comes back ok. aswell as this the pump has been hooked up to a battery to check that it works and it does. due to it being a k-jet engine it has no ecu...... so what could it be lol its VERY annoying

i have also just carried out a continuity check on the harness for the ignition module and have found that the wiring to the hall sender unit comes back giving no readings at all. could this be the problem ?

lol im talkin 2 myself here... correction on above, after a bit of fidling (remembering to reconnect the yellow/red wire XD ) the bridge did in fact work and the pump worked. so does that mean its the controll module or sumthing else which is stopping the pump from priming and working upon starting ??

I was going to say before your correction, are you sure the battery is connected, as if the pump will not run with the two power contacts bridged you really have a problem or fuse 5 is blown. Anyway, from the sound of it your coil is not sending a signal to the fuel pump relay. The red/black wire on the coil is a low tension feed back to the fuse box for dash board rpm feed and fuel pump relay trigger so check the continuity of the red/black wire from the coil terminal 1 (detached from the coil) back to the fuel pump relay position at socket 5 which corresponds to terminal 31b on the relay, which is the small half size terminal.
hi , i have now done that and it give a positive read back so the wiring is fine, does that mean after all this nightmare and horror of searching through the wiring... it is in fact the coil in the end ? lol

No, it may be as you first said, the hall sender. Do you have a spark when cranking?
i did test that both the HT lead and a spark plug and neither gave me a spark so assumed it was the coil ,hopefully, rather than the hall sender unit.
